During the same time period, a disabled German woman named Margarete Steiff owned a soft toy factory in the city of Giengen. Her company included a soft bear in its toy catalog. Earlier, her nephew Richard had convinced Steiff to add bears to her list of toys. WebRichard Steiff created the first Steiff Teddy bear, the so-called BEAR 55 PB, in the early 20th century. Most collectors believe that the first bear ever made according to original design doesn’t exist anymore. This lovely stuffed toy had movable arms and legs, and it was the first one with such features worldwide.
