WebSchistosomiasis is a disease caused by a parasitic worm that lives in certain types of freshwater snails. The parasite leaves the snail and enters the water where it can enter a person’s body through the skin when a person wades or swims in contaminated freshwater. Within days of becoming infected, a person may develop a rash or itchy skin. WebSnails, along with slugs, use their rasping tongues to eat holes in leaves, stems and flowers of many plants. There are many control options available for slugs and snails but despite this they remain a persistent pest. The RHS is carrying out a scheme of research on gastropod control methods to improve the advice we can give to home gardeners.
