So much has already been redone for Legendary Edition, and the tools we use are much more compatible with all 3 games than it was in the past, meaning full "trilogy mods" can now be made much more easily.

Strictly speaking, they aren't necessary to play. They do however still have some value and you might want them. (In particular, Beyond Light is necessary to unlock the Stasis powers).
